North Medford boys rally, upend Wilson Wednesday Dec 20, 2017 at 2:00 AM Dec 20, 2017 at 10:55 PM LAKE OSWEGO — The North Medford boys basketball team is commonly known as the Black Tornado, but after winning five games away from home in six days, the nickname Road Warriors comes to mind. North twice rallied from seven points down to defeat Wilson 58-55 on Wednesday in the Lakeside Classic at Lakeridge High. The Tornado (8-1) was the three-time defending champion of the tournament, which switched its format from bracketed to round-robin this year, meaning that although North could not repeat as titlist, the team still accomplished its goal by going 3-0. “We did what we came up to do,” North coach Scott Plankenhorn said. It was the sixth straight victory for the Tornado — all away from home — which has played eight straight on the road and is looking forward to a hometown competition in the Abby's Holiday Classic prior to beginning Southwest Conference play on Jan. 5 at home against Sheldon. “We’re right where we’d want to be,” Plankenhorn said. Against Wilson, senior guard Quinton Rumrey went for a career-high 15 points, including 7 of 10 from the free throw line, several of which came during the final period. Senior wing Kaison Faust, who led North with 24 points, six rebounds and three assists, scored a key inside basket with an assist from senior post Jake O'Connor to put the Tornado ahead to stay. North came up with a pair of defensive stops to end it. “Wilson came out and got after us and they were hungry for a win,” Plankenhorn said. “To survive a team that was as committed to winning today as they were was exciting.” O'Connor pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for North. Senior guard Blake O'Connell scored 18 for the Trojans (3-6). NORTH MEDFORD (58): Wells 0, Sandoval 0, Banuelos 5, Rumrey 15, J. Thomas 3, O’Connor 0, Carpenter 0, Parker 7, Faust 24, Spence 4.
