PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL Crater glides to win over Wildcats, 70-34 CENTRAL POINT -- Crater High girls basketball coach David Heard was expecting a reasonably good challenge from the Glide Wildcats on Tuesday night. For one period, he got it. But then the Comets used their depth to run away with a 70-34 non-conference victory. Eleven of the 12 Comets who suited up got into the scoring column. Sophomore post Jody McLeod led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Comets ran their record to 3-2. "We pressed them and wore them out," Heard said after the Comets extended a 17-11 first-period lead to 42-18 at halftime. "We had some kids come off the bench and do a good job." Freshman point guard Sarah Yager had a complete game with nine points, eight assists, six steals, four rebounds and no turnovers. "She's not seeing the kind of pressure she'll see in our conference, but she's growing as a varsity player every minute she's out there," Heard said of Yager. "She had a very solid game tonight, and she didn't play in the fourth quarter." Backup point guard Addie Wiersma, also a freshman, chipped in with seven points. Heard was also pleased with senior post Emily Wiley, who helped hold Glide star Kara McKanus to three points. Wiley had five blocked shots to go along with seven points. Worse yet, the Pirates hit just 1-of-8 free throws in the fourth period.
