Cavemen boys win Rotary meet By GREG STILES GRANTS PASS -- Perhaps it shouldn't have been so close. If Grants Pass could've held on to win the 4x100 relay, if the Cavemen's Parker Lane had tracked down Reedsport's J.J. King in the 100 meters or reeled in a runner or two in the 200, Grants Pass might have been sitting pretty going into the final event of the 50th Grants Pass Rotary Track and Field Classic Saturday at Russ Werner Field. Grants Pass and Myrtle Point were tied for the boys lead and Klamath Union lurked close behind going into the 4x400 relay. "I just knew we had to step up," said Lane. "The relay had to win it for the team. "The 400 relay was disappointing, the 100 barely slipped from my grasp and I don't know what happened in the 200." As West Valley's Joe Burgon dug out on the anchor leg of the long relay, Lane collected himself, took the pass from Tom Martin and sped off for all he was worth. "I wasn't concentrating on who was in front of me, I just knew my team was counting on me," Lane said. "Even if he would've been a 47-second (400 meter) runner, it wouldn't have mattered -- I had to pull it off." Lane passed Burgon on the back stretch and won by nearly 10 meters to clinch the team title for the Cavemen. The Grants Pass quartet, including Brian Parmer and Dana Thomas, was clocked in 3:27.23. "I've been on the other side of these things enough to know this is the fun side," Grants Pass coach Roger Stewart said. "It was really up in the air with Klamath having a faster time coming in." The final 10 points gave the Grants Pass 66, while Myrtle Point was second with 56, followed by Klamath with 50, South Eugene with 40 and North Medford 36 in the 38-team field. Henley's girls remained unbeaten in invitational events by chalking up 70 points, while North Medford and Rogue River tied for second with 47 points. South Medford had 44 and Klamath Union 36. The other big Grants Pass points came from Mike Thomson, who won the high hurdles (14.93) and Jake Zeliff, who was second in the discus (158-1) and triple jump (43-8). It was a day of spectacular performances on and off the field. Klamath Union's Ian Dobson, gearing up for assaults on state meet records in the 1,500 and 3,000, hit target times midway through both events and set two Rotary records in the process. Pushed by South Medford's Perry Custance, Dobson was clocked in a state-best 3:53.52 in the 1,500. Custance, who led after one lap, was timed in 3:55.86. Dobson then steamed to a 4:20 opening mile en route to an 8:30.62 in the 3,000. South Medford senior Colin Grant, meanwhile, cleared a school record 6 feet, 7 inches in the high jump for first place. "I've always jumped well at this pit," said Grant, whose previous best of 6-5 came in a dual meet at Werner Field last month. "I was hoping for 6-6 and I was pretty happy with that. I thought I had 6-8 on my second try, but I got it with my hand and on the third jump I was a little tired. The prom was last night and I didn't get much sleep." North Medford's Nick Dunn out-leaned Rogue River's Jesse Smith to win the 400 meters in 49.63. Dunn had to make up several strides down the stretch. Rogue River senior Tony Roberts launched the javelin a lifetime-best of 203-11. He's hoping to pass school-record holder Roy Seidmeyer's 208-3 mark at this week's Phoenix Twilight meet. While Henley scored in nine girls events to win easily, North Medford's 4x100 girls relay set both a meet record and improved on the state best when senior Keri Cain, freshman Emily Dunn, sophomore Denali Tice and junior Jennifer Abbott were clocked in 49.62. It was the first time that unit had run together. Tice replaced senior Jamie MacLauchlan, who suffered a hamstring injury in Thursday's dual at South Medford. "We stuck in one good leg for another," North Medford coach Mark Hodges said. "Jamie gave us the flexibility to take Tice and put her in the 400, 200, triple jump and long relay. That flexibility isn't there now." The best news for North might have been that there were no new injuries. Abbott, Dunn and freshman 400 runner Rosanna Medina all saw limited duty. "We just wanted to keep an eye on them," Hodges said. "Our health is most important right now. We want to make sure we're peaking at the end of the season." Medina, running in lane nine, came off the final turn with a commanding lead and easily outlegged Henley's talented trio of Tiffany Mack, Emily Mathis and Janell Spicer to the finish in 59.64. "I got out a lot faster than I normally do and I got faster the last 100 because they were right on my tail," Medina said. It was her first shot against the Henley runners. "I didn't get to run against them at (the Yreka Lions' Invitational) Medina said. "When I checked in, they didn't tell me they had combined the first two heats and I was running in the third heat. After the first two races, I went over and found my race had been run. I was very upset because I wanted to see what my competition was going to be here and for the rest of the year." Rogue River's Sarah Zempel unleased a state-best throw of 139-3 in the discus, took second in the shot put 40-7) and was sixth in the javelin (117-6) to boost Rogue River into second place. Zempel's previous best in the discus was 129-11. "At the beginning of the year I wanted to go 40 feet in the shot, 130 in the discus and 120 in the javelin," Zempel said. "Now I've upped my standards. My coaches think I can go 45 or 46 in the shot and 146 in the discus." A total of seven meet records were broken on the generally warm, calm day. Myrtle Point long jumper Jamil Wynn leaped 23-6 to eclipse Jim Hill's 1963 standard of 22-8. Teammate Caleb Krantz topped 15-6 in the pole vault to better the 15-4 mark by Milwaukie's Sam Crowe in 1998. West Valley, of Cottonwood, Calif., pole vaulter Katie Eckley cleared 11-9 to surpass the 11-0 standard by South Medford's Kristen Russell in 1999.
