Gerardo Martinez Galvan, 23, was indicted for murdering 18-year-old Victor Joel Cruz in September 2001. Galvan — a Mexican national — remained in the Jackson County Jail without bail Thursday. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies arrested Galvan a week ago at his girlfriend’s workplace on Brian Street in Medford, said sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Fox. Investigators believed that Galvan had left for Mexico immediately after Cruz was found shot to death on Sept. 23, 2001, Fox said. An anonymous person told detectives Galvan had returned to the area, Fox said, adding Galvan and his girlfriend have a child together. Galvan was an acquaintance of Cruz, Fox said. He refused to discuss their relationship further. "There’s some loose ends in this investigation that aren’t quite tied up yet," Fox said. On the last day Cruz’s family saw him alive, his pager beeped as he was taking his teenage brothers home from the Rogue Valley Mall. He told them that he was going cruising and would later return to his family’s home. The next morning, he was found dead in a passenger seat of his family’s green Ford Probe, which was parked on a dirt road near the 3600 block of Old Military Road in Central Point. "I don’t think there was any evidence that anyone tried to hide this homicide," Fox said. Telephone numbers found on Cruz’s pager was a key factor in developing a suspect, Fox said. Cruz’s girlfriend, Kati Bogart, told reporters last year that she feared Cruz was involved in drugs. However, Fox would not discuss Thursday whether drugs played a role in the killing.
