Taking advantage of Michael Staver’s second-half hat trick, the Crusaders cruised to a 4-1 win over Umpqua Valley Christian. The teams battled to a scoreless first-half tie. "We were dominating the game starting off," St. Mary’s coach Joel Benson said, "but we really went flat in the first half. They started beating us to the ball." St. Mary’s (4-1, 2-0 Dist. 3) seized control early in the second half when Sean Snider scored from the 12-yard penalty stripe off a pass from John Kewish just 2 minutes into the period. Then Staver took over. The junior forward received an Austin Grant pass and netted his first goal at the 48th minute. Staver dribbled through the Monarchs’ defense to score unassisted at the 65th minute. Five minutes later, he completed the Crusaders’ offensive output on an assist from Josh Jones. "We came out real strong in the second half," said Benson. "We spread the field and used our passing ability." Staver recorded his second straight hat trick and has tallied 10 goals this season. St. Mary’s goalie Greg Gradwell had a shutout until Umpqua Valley scored because of a defensive mistake during stoppage time. Skyline Conference Boys HENLEY 4, ROGUE RIVER 2 — At Klamath Falls, Nick Diaz scored in the 47th minute to break a 2-2 halftime tie against winless Rogue River. The Chieftains (0-3) fell behind 2-0 in the first two minutes on goals by Brian Smith and Jay Carter. Jed Dunlap and Eric Valencia scored for Rogue River. Non-conference Boys NORTH MEDFORD 2, NORTH EUGENE 0 — At Eugene, North Medford’s Jorge Castro scored on an unassisted goal from 25 yards out in the 50th minute and Luis Cabrera added another in the 67th minute for the non-conference win. Sophomore goalkeeper Devin Torrey needed only two saves to post the shutout for North Medford (2-4), which outshot North Eugene 13-5. Non-conference Girls NORTH MEDFORD 1, NORTH EUGENE 1 — Karen Thiebes took a pass from Megan Servoss 13 minutes into the match and scored as North Medford tied visiting North Eugene in the non- conference match. The Black Tornado (2-1-3) outshot the Highlanders, 25-12, and continued to receive outstanding play from senior midfielder Lisa Munyon. EAGLE POINT 2, HENLEY 2 — At Eagle Point, Alisa Goslin scored twice to rally Eagle Point (0-3-2) and Eagles goalie Shawna Olson denied Henley’s Becky Schwartz on a breakaway in the final minute to secure the non-conference tie. Schwartz had a goal and assisted on a goal by Megan Jones as Henley took a 2-0 lead 17 minutes into the first half. Henley outshot the Eagles 11-7, with Olson posting five saves. ROGUE RIVER 2, MAZAMA 0 — At Rogue River, Krystal Krueger and Megan Schindler scored back-to-back goals midway through the first half of the non-conference match to lead Rogue River. The Chieftains outshot the Vikings (1-3 overall) 12-4. ST. MARY’S 0, SOUTH MEDFORD JV 0 — St. Mary’s controlled time of possession and doubled South Medford’s shots in the non-conference game at the Crusaders’ field. St. Mary’s (3-1-1) outshot the Panthers, 30-15. South Medford freshman goalkeeper Bre Reordan had a strong game along with defenders Madi Galo and Kaileen Amish.
