Freshman Austin Wiersma hit two free throws in the final seconds to lift Crater (3-4) over Illinois Valley, 63-62 in double overtime, in the first round of the Hidden Valley Winter Classic. "It was the first game after Christmas, and both teams looked like they sat around eating turkey and ham during the break," Crater coach Matt Meunier said. "We have a lot of inexperienced players, so to be able to win a close one has to be good for their confidence." Illinois Valley’s Chris Loock erupted for 33 points, but the Cougars’ downfall came at the free-throw line, where they could only convert 16-of-33 attempts. IV’s Tyler Mikels missed two free throws in the final seconds of regulation with the game tied, 49-49. Crater, in turn, couldn’t cash in on its chance on the ensuing possession. Crater’s Ryan Bogle, who finished with five points, hit a leaner with six seconds left in the first overtime to force the second extra session. Preston Tate (14), Colin Schoonover (14), Andrew Norum (11) and Jay Slezak (10) were all in double figures for Crater. Brian Paul added 10 points for Illinois Valley. Crater plays Marshfield today.
