Ellis, a 6-foot point guard who gained a reputation for making big plays at crunch time, averaged 15 points and five assists per game. He guided the Pirates to their first Skyline Conference championship in 12 years. The Pirates, 13-1 in league, ascended to a No. 5 state ranking by season’s end but lost in the state playoffs to Junction City, 52-42. They ended the season with a 22-3 record. Advertisement Ellis earlier was named conference co-player of the year with Darren Clark of North Valley. Clark, a 6-3 senior forward who averaged 15 points per game, made the all-state third team, and 6-3 junior center Skylar Morgan of Henley received honorable mention. Nick Finley of Creswell was player of the year and his mentor, Ron Lampe, was coach of the year. Joining Finley on the first team were Wilsonville’s Jeremy Wilson, Ontario’s Wade Douglas, Tillamook’s Jeremiah Runkle and Junction City’s Micah Mooney. Balloting was conducted by The Oregonian, and voting was done by coaching representatives from each league.
