Letters to the Editor Wednesday Aug 24, 2016 at 12:01 AM Vote for outdoor school This November, we have an opportunity to make a world of difference for our children. I’m talking about a chance to send every fifth- or sixth-grader in the state to Outdoor School where students will engage in hands-on science, experience and connect with the great outdoors, and unplug from social media and reconnect with each other. Outdoor School has a proud legacy in Oregon. As adults, Oregonians who went to Outdoor School can still share their fond memories with you. Not every child has the chance to get outdoors with their family nor can they afford summer camp. This levels the playing field and gets every child outside. These kids will grow up to want to protect our natural resources, enter into science fields, and become engaged local citizens, connected to the place they are from. Come November, vote yes, to fund Outdoor School for all! Hannah Kolni, sixth-grade teacher Ashland A third option We have a third choice. And a good one! With both the major party nominees sporting disapproval ratings over 60 percent, higher than any other major party nominee in decades, many Americans are displeased. There is another option. Former two-term governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson is running as the Libertarian Party nominee for president. we have an option to bring sanity back to a very ugly election. Oh yes, Libertarian — it means liberty! Johnson has solid leadership experience and has a basic platform of being socially liberal and economically conservative As governor, Gary Johnson was fiscally responsible. He also improved many social programs. This year presents a huge opportunity for America. Gary Johnson, his smaller government intent, and non-interventionist foreign policy are what America needs. Curious who is in charge of the landscape maintenance around both the "old" and "new" south Medford interchange areas. There are a lot of very tall weeds that exceed city ordinances. Not a good look to a main city entrance. ODOT? City of Medford? Jeff Kyker Medford Burkinis In the Wednesday Aug. 17 edition of the Mail Tribune I read Kathleen Parker's Burkini column and saw on the same page political cartoonist Danziger's Burkini cartoon. Kathleen Parker's column comically slammed the French for outlawing the wearing of beach burkas on their beaches. I suppose that after the first Burkini-clad beach goer murders as many infidels as possible with a suicide bomb hidden under the beach burka, as has already happened in Israel, columnist Parker may change her tune.
