We made investment decisions to purchase rental homes as far back as 30 years ago for our retirement. Now our ability to control our properties has been taken away from us just as we are retiring. Part of our plan is based on the possible need for cash to fund our retirement as necessary, which includes both rental income and the ability to sell each property as needed. Now the state will determine how we can operate our investments and retirement. There are good and bad landlords and tenants. These laws are in reaction to the few landlords who have taken advantage of the current shortages. Up until the last couple of years we kept rents low to compete with other properties available. We have been careful to raise rents only slightly for those tenants that were taking care of our properties and paying the rents timely. Now we will raise our rents to the maximum allowed each year and as tenants move on we will sell each home, most likely to an owner occupant. We have heard from countless other investors that plan the same. John Doelger Medford Outrageous attack An outrageous attack on children is moving through our Legislature, without a vote by Oregon citizens. HB 3063 removes all religious/philosophical vaccine exemptions for children attending any school — public, charter, private, preschool, possibly colleges and universities; and bans children not fully vaccinated from all school-related events and activities. This would affect over 31,000 K-12 students, including thousands in Jackson County. The bill requires each child to receive every dose of every vaccine on Oregon’s schedule. Missing or delaying a single dose is cause for removal from school. A fast-tracked public hearing was held less than a week after it was introduced. Several hundred opponents attended the hearing on Feb. 28 and work session on March 14. Yet the Health Committee passed it to the Joint Ways and Means Committee. This draconian bill will usher in school segregation based on vaccination status! Most parents are unaware of the bill, and others are furious that Oregon’s Legislature would interfere with how they raise their children. If legislators can mandate risky, for-profit, minimal liability medical products for families and deny education to healthy children, what’s next? Please speak up! Liz Schmidt Ashland Trumps’ wall deception If Trump builds his wall using funds obtained from abusing presidential executive powers, he still will not have kept his promise to his base. He promised Mexico would pay for the wall, not the American taxpayer. The wall is a ridiculous notion anyway. A wall to keep people out violates the very principles and values taught about America in my childhood. A wall to keep people out also keeps people within the wall. How many remember the Berlin Wall? Both major political parties are complicit in destroying the moral, ethical and constitutional values on which this nation was founded. Both parties are complicit in making a mockery of these values and principles that constitute the fabric that held this nation together. A plaque placed on the Statue of Liberty states: “... Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” SAD (such a deception). Return the Statue of Liberty to France if the wall is built, Then people, prepare yourselves for the worst, for soon your enslavement will be complete.
