The Gran Chaco: Pathways Towards a Sustainable Future
19Most of the soybean exports from Argentina, Bolivia
and Paraguay head to the EU, China and South-
East Asia, as well as to countries within the region.
Most beef exports head to China, Chile, the EU,
Russia and Israel. Notably, intra-regional trade plays
a significant role in the region. For example, Bolivia
and Paraguay export soy to Argentina and Brazil,
even though both are major soy producers. This
dynamic can be attributed to the greater industrial
capacity of Brazil and Argentina and their ability to
export higher-value processed goods. Soy and beef are the largest agricultural
commodities produced and exported in South
America and production of both commodities has
expanded recently within the Gran Chaco. Table 2
illustrates the main export destinations and values
(in $) for beef products, while Table 3 presents
the main export destinations and values (in $) for
soybeans and their by-products from Gran Chaco
countries in 2022.
