St. Mary's topples Bonanza St. Mary's turned defensive in the second half and, at the same time, turned its Southern Cascade League boys basketball game against Bonanza in its favor. The Crusaders, 10-6 overall, won their second league game in as many tries, 62-46, behind a ball-hawking defense. "We really started playing good defense and started putting the ball in the basket," said St. Mary's assistant coach Richard Faust of the third quarter, when the Crusaders turned a six-point halftime lead into a 17-point bulge. "We changed up to a pressure defense," added Faust, "and that helped us get a key start and get going. We didn't trail after that; it wasn't even close." Pete Staver, playing a wing in the 1-3-1 trapping half-court scheme, collected nine steals, most of them in the third. "He really came up and started putting a hand on the ball," said Faust. Meanwhile, Thatcher Jones supplied the offense. Jones scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the third. Much of his production came because the middle of the Antlers' defense softened while playing a box-and-one against Crusaders post Michael Fiddler. Fiddler had done a lot of damage in the second quarter, scoring 10 of St. Mary's 15 points. He finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
