PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP Tornado takes two from Titans Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 20, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 20, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News North Medford’s softball team proved it can win in any sort of scenario on Saturday, posting a 6-0 win over West Salem in the opening game of a doubleheader before rallying for a 6-5 win in the nightcap at North Medford High. Those wins came on the heels of the Black Tornado’s season-opening 10-run rout of McNary and helped North Medford improve to 3-0 this season. Sarah Thomas picked up the pitching wins during both games, coming on in relief of Teanna Gonsalves in the nightcap. Thomas struck out 10 and allowed five hits and two walks in the opener and one earned run with four strikeouts, three hits and one walk in 3⅔ innings of Game 2. Tra Kucera was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Olivia Lethlean scored twice in Game 1 but it was the nightcap that provided added excitement as West Salem (0-2) managed a 4-3 lead through five innings. Kucera helped rally North Medford with a line drive single to center field to open a pivotal three-run sixth inning. Rylan Austin followed with a single and Thomas added an RBI single where Austin was able to advance to third base and Thomas to second base. A comebacker to the pitcher gave West Salem its first out at home but Mahal Miles was able to race to second base and Thomas scored the go-ahead run when there was a throw to second to try and nab Miles. When the relay throw home to get Thomas got past the catcher, Miles subsequently moved to third base and was brought home for a 6-4 advantage on a groundout by Alex Barry. West Salem was able to score once in the top of the seventh following a triple by Taylor Holmquist and sacrifice fly but, after a walk, Thomas closed the door from there to leave the tying run stranded at third. ASHLAND 21, ILLINOIS VALLEY 17 : At Cave Junction, Gracia Dodds had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two and Gianni Pippa added two hits and five RBIs as Ashland evened its record at 1-1 on the season. For Illinois Valley (0-3), Mahkayla Sommers collected three hits, including a triple. GRANTS PASS WINS TWO : At Forest Grove, sophomore pitcher Alyssa Etheridge registered victories in both games, including a two-hit shutout against Newberg. Grants Pass (2-0) defeated Forest Grove, 5-4, in the first game then blanked Newberg 3-0. Marissa Eilenberger and Maddie Naylor had two hits each against Forest Grove.
