Paul Steinle, a long-time journalist, professor and administrator, became Southern Oregon University’s associate provost July 1. He has been at SOU since September 2001 teaching journalism in the communications department and served on the curriculum committee. As associate provost, he will work to support faculty needs and to guide curriculum development. "I back up the provost, kind of like a chief operating officer," he said. Advertisement Steinle plans to launch a center for teaching and learning to help professors improve their skills and will work on the school’s re-accreditation, which comes up in three years. Steinle replaces Judith Ginsburg, who retired earlier this year. Steinle worked 30 years in journalism, serving as president and chief operating officer of United Press International. He began teaching journalism in 1991 and led programs at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut and the University of Miami. Josie Wilson, chairwoman of the psychology department, was named interim dean of the School of Social Science, Health and Physical Education. She was picked during an on-campus search and will remain in the position while a committee conducts a national search for a new dean, officials said. The previous dean of that school, Ken Kemper, plans to teach at SOU’s new School of Education. Provost Earl Potter also announced that Barbara Scott, associate provost for extended programs, will focus additional attention on community colleges, where many Oregonians start their college careers. The state Board of Higher Education strives to create partnerships among all Oregon schools and Scott’s new focus will help SOU do that, Potter said. Separately, Teri O’Rourke, interim director of information technology, will take on additional responsibility as chief information officer Kevin Talbert eases into retirement.
