Tornado girls in command ASHLAND - North Medford's girls are poised to win their fourth straight conference tennis championship after the first day of the Southern Oregon Conference district tournament Friday at Hunter Park. The tournament concludes beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hunter Park with semifinals in singles and doubles and the consolation finals. The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to the state tournament May 17-19 at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham and Tualatin Hills Recreation Center in Beaverton. The Black Tornado advanced top-seeded Jenny Brown into the singles semifinals and two doubles teams into the semifinals. Additionally, North's Vanessa Barrus will play in the consolation singles finals. Roseburg is North Medford's only hurdle for winning another SOC team title. Ashland has locked up third place. "It's a nice race and that will push the girls," North Medford coach Dale Jensen said. "Basically, what we need to do Saturday is hold to our seeds and we will win district." The singles and doubles sides of the bracket played true to form with the top four seeds advancing into the semifinals. Brown didn't lose a game in two matches to cruise into the singles semis against third-seeded Megan Moon of Grants Pass. The other semifinal match pits No. 2 Kristina Bott of Klamath Union against Roseburg's Stacey Wetmore. Barrus lost in the first round to Emily Williamson of Roseburg, but stormed back in the consolations with a pair of 8-0 wins. Barrus plays South Medford's Nicole Hoyal in the consolation finals. In doubles, North advanced all four teams into the third round. North's second-seeded squad of Leslie Schultz and Annie Chaney plays Ashland's third-seeded team of Jenny Spears and Jessica Baker, while No. 1 Becky Correll and Elisa Tyron of Roseburg faces North's April Louis and Shannon Leever. "What was really nice was having Vanessa (Barrus) coming through in singles and our No. 4 doubles team (Beth Alston-Melissa Witten), that was a big win," Jensen said. Weber-Lee, Ros, 6-2, 6-0. * SOC DISTRICT BOYS TOURNAMENT - At Roseburg, top-seeded Andre Nilsson and second-seeded Tyler Wilson of North Medford charged into the semifinals of the singles bracket and the Black Tornado's doubles team of Jeremy Leever and Dru Phillips upset top-seeded Lance Streng and Ari Zaslow of Ashland to make the semifinal round. North Medford took a narrow lead over Roseburg in the battle for the team championship. Ashland endured a bad day as all of the Grizzy players - singles and doubles - were eliminated from the tournament. Unseeded Ryan Felker of Roseburg stunned No. 3 seeded Aaron Harris of Ashland in singles play 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Felker then defeated North Medford's Clint Russell to reach the semifinals.
