St. Mary's triumphs in season opener Sophomore center Michael Fiddler scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds Thursday night to pace St. Mary�s to a season-opening 76-48 victory over visiting Riddle. Jason Caplan added 17 points and four assists for St. Mary�s, while Thatcher Jones popped in 12 points and doled out four assists. Chris Murphy had five steals and Derek Phillips pulled down six rebounds for the Crusaders. A.J. Duckett topped Riddle with 20 points, while Craig Schofield had 12. St. Mary�s plays host Santiam Christian in a four-team tournament tonight, while City Christian plays Cascade Christian in the other game. Short, who last month signed a letter of intent to play for Oregon, scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Miners took a 17-15 lead that swelled to a 33-21 halftime advantage. Matt Pittman tossed in 15 points for the Knights, while Scott Butterbaugh and Matt Grossenbach added 10 points each. Yreka dropped a 55-54 decision to Klamath Union earlier this week. Girls Basketball EAGLE POINT 32, NORTH VALLEY 30 � At Merlin, sophomore Alisa Lee tossed in 15 points and freshman Ashley Curtis tacked on 10 more as Eagle Point presented new head coach Tim Rouhier with his first victory. North Valley (1-1) converted on just nine of 26 free throws in the first half as the Eagles (1-0) took an 18-16 advantage. Lee pulled down 11 rebounds and Curtis grabbed eight more for. The Eagles held on when North Valley�s Galina Vial had a 12-footer rim off at the buzzer. North Valley opened the season on Monday with a 43-27 victory at Brookings. Jackson paced St. Mary�s (1-0) with 14 points and added four steals, while Vaninetti dominated inside the paint with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. St. Mary�s jumped out to a 19-12 halftime lead and used an 18-11 surge in the third quarter to put the contest away. Sasha Drosdick chipped in 10 points for the Crusaders, while Annie Maurer had eight and Emily Smith added six. Kayla McCurry paced Riddle with 12 points.
