Challengers cruise past Lost River MERRILL - Southern Cascade League girls basketball is so unpredictable, it's understandable why Cascade Christian coach Loren King was relieved to win at Lost River Friday, 42-34. Cascade, mind you, is tied for first place and Lost River has only two league wins. But one of the Raiders' triumphs was earlier this week over Bonanza - the team Cascade is tied with - so King knew his club was in for a tussle. "Our league this year is a lot closer than it has been in years past," said King. "We have a little more parity. All of the young players in the league have stepped up, and everybody is much tougher than at the beginning of the season." The Challengers (18-3, 8-1 SCL) end the regular season by hosting Bonanza in a contest that will determine the league title at 6:30 p.m. next Friday at Superior Gym in Medford. Against Lost River, the game was back-and-forth until the fourth quarter, when Cascade opened a miniscule lead, then pulled the ball out and forced the Raiders to foul. The Challengers' Hannah Gettman made all four of her free throws in the fourth quarter and Amy Roseberg was 4-for-5. "It was really tough defense," said King. "Both teams played hardcore defense. Neither side would give the other guy a break." Roseberg led the Challengers, who have had six different players top them in scoring this season, with 10 points. MARY'S 36, GILCHRIST 31 - With three Gilchrist starters on the bench to start the game, St. Mary's got off to a big first-period lead, then had to hold off the Grizzlies down the stretch. The Crusaders (7-14, 4-5 SCL) built a 13-2 first-quarter margin and led 20-7 at halftime. Gilchrist outscored St. Mary's 13-5 in the final period and cut the margin to four points with about 40 seconds left. Alex Tomlinson came off the bench to provide the Crusaders with some big blocks late in the game. Freshman post Brittany Farrer sparked St. Mary's with 11 points and nine rebounds. Kayla McKibben came off the bench to add 10 points for the Loggers, while Brianna Smeltz had six points and five assists. PROSPECT 56, PAISLEY 30 - At Prospect, freshman forward Candice Bennett turned in her best all-around performance with 13 points and 17 rebounds for Prospect (11-8, 4-7 Sky A). Senior point guard Sarah Gordon scored a game-high 19 points to lead three Prospect players in double figures. Gordon added three assists and two steals. Prospect junior wing Lacey Tallman contributed 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals. The Cougars built a 31-10 first-half lead against Paisley, which was eliminated from possible postseason play. Hosanna, which made only 27 of 51 from the foul line, outscored New Hope Christian 22-9 in the third quarter for the win. Kristi Bush matched Childers in points with 26 to lead New Hope.
