The 39-year-old Central Point resident was pronounced dead at the scene after he lost control of the 2003 Harley Heritage, said Sheriff Mike Winters. The bike, which was headed westbound from Highway 99 near Voorhies Road, slid into a 1998 Subaru driven by Russell Dylan Ruediger, 38, of Ashland, he said. While Moberly was lying in the roadway, another vehicle following behind the motorcycle ran over him, said Winters. Advertisement Investigators haven’t determined which incident resulted in Moberly’s death. The name of the other driver is being withheld because of the sensitivity of certain aspects of the investigation. "It was a sad, sad deal," said Winters. "There was a lot of family right there that we were dealing with." Medford Chaplain Bob Gass came out to console the family, Winters said. Traffic was closed in both directions for three hours while deputies investigated the scene. Winters said the accident occurred just a few minutes after the purchase and was just a few miles from the Harley Davidson dealer in Phoenix. Moberly, who was wearing a helmet, didn’t appear to have a permit to ride a motorcycle, but Winters said the dealer said he had taken the necessary classes and may have had a temporary permit. "Obviously, he was a real new rider," he said. Winters said it looked like Moberly, who had just celebrated his birthday on Oct. 13, tried to lay the bike down when he realized he was losing control. The motorcycle was heading into a right-hand curve. There didn’t appear to be any contributing factors in the accident such as gravel or a wet road surface, said Winters. While the accident is still under investigation, Winters theorized that Moberly "thought he wasn’t going to make the curve and abandoned ship on the cycle as he was in the middle of the curve." The Harley wasn’t totaled and the Subaru received about $2,500 in damage to the driver’s side, he said. Speed also wasn’t a factor in the accident. "The speedometer on the bike was stuck at 45," said Winters.
