Former SOGT winners in contention By Kevin Goff The field was whittled down to 16 Friday in the regular mens championship flight of the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament at the Rogue Valley Country Club. Three former champions remained in contention after the wet and windy second round of match play. The one upset came when Mark DeBoer ousted co-medalist Doug Luther on the 21st. Luther equaled Brad Bills low qualifying mark of 71 on Wednesday but struggled to a 2-and-1 win over Scott Ashpole on Thursday. Looking to defend his title, Tommy Smith breezed past Rick Hassmann, 8 and 6. Smith now faces Kelly Owen, the 1973 champion, who got past 97 winner Doug Olson, 3 and 2. Also still in the hunt is 1998 champion and last years runner-up, Brooks Newsom, who downed John Kozlowski, 3 and 2. Bills, the 1993 champion, bounced back from an off day on Thursday with a 3 and 2 win over Scott Reed. Kevin Klabunde, the 1996 and 98 junior-senior champion, slipped by Todd Dixon, 2 and 1. "I played pretty solid," said Klabunde, who advanced to the finals in 1991 and 92 in regular mens play but has yet to win a championship. "Todd (Dixon) played very well and made things interesting towards the end." Dixon birdied four holes down the stretch to inch closer but couldnt overtake Klabunde, who was consistent the entire round with two bogeys and a birdie while hitting 14 greens. He finished 1 over par for 17 holes. The first foursome in regular mens play tees off today at 9:50 a.m. In the junior-senior division, defending champion Doug Ward moved past the second round with a 2 and 1 victory over Dan Dixon. Ward, who also claimed a title in 1997, moves on to face Gary Loeb, a 2-and-1 winner over John Johnson. Bob Dickey upset last years runner-up, Greg Miller, 1-up while 1995 champion Bob Cox advanced with a 3-and-2 win over Dave Wittkopf. Looking to defend last years senior division title, Bob Harrell advanced with a 2-and-1 victory over John Humphrey, while 1999 runner-up Justin Smith also moved on with a 1-up win over Gary Stein. Pam Hubbard, the senior womens division champion both years since its formation, moved closer to her third straight title with an 7-and-6 victory over Carol Jones. Gayle Jantzer, last years runner-up, fell to Bunny Casey, 3 and 1, to drop out of championship-flight contention. The regular womens division took the day off and resumes match play today.
