Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 11, 2005 Stoutenburgh just misses meet record at Yreka Invite YREKA, Calif. — Isaac Stoutenburgh came within three seconds of the course record at the Yreka Invitational cross country meet on Saturday. The Crater High senior blazed over the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes and 29 seconds, narrowly missing the course record of 15:26 set by Klamath Union’s Lauren Jespersen in 2001. Stoutenburgh’s teammate, Jake Keyser, finished second in 15:55. "Isaac really wanted the record, but he still ran a great time on a tough course," said Crater coach Justin Loftus. "And he pretty much ran alone." Stoutenburgh eclipsed former KU and current Stanford University runner Ian Dobson for the second-fastest time in meet history. Dobson clocked 15:37 in 1999. Advertisement In the team race, Enterprise, Calif., edged North Medford by one point. The Black Tornado used a strong overall showing, led by Rick Nielsen in 11th place and Garrett Frierson in 12th. Ashland’s Natalie Hemphill, meanwhile, won the girls’ 4,000-meter race in 14:45 and came within 23 seconds of Sarah Brandy’s course record. North Medford’s Brittney Dunn finished third in 15:56 and Hidden Valley’s Ashley Gilkey was fourth in 15:51. The Grizzlies easily won the girls’ team title with 64 points. BEN CREEK MEMORIAL — At Gold Beach, St. Mary’s junior Mike Seus ran away from the pack over the final mile to win the boys division of the Ben Creek Memorial cross country race. Seus, who finished 10th at the Class 2A state meet last fall, was clocked in 17:16 over the 5,000-meter course that started on the beach. Jared Bassett of Marshfield was second in 17:25, leading the Pirate boys to the team title. In the girls race, St. Mary’s junior Lindsay Gasik used patience and a strong finishing kick to place fourth in a time of 21:30. Arcata, Calif., got a 1-2 finish from Tiffany Knox (21:11) and Ariel Fraser (21:14) and dominated the team competition.
